Most people use ChatGPT like a smarter search engine. Type a question, get an answer, move on. That works, but it leaves most of the tool's value untouched. These ten features are not obscure hacks — they are built into the product right now. You just have to know where to look and how to use them.
1. Custom Instructions That Stick Across Every Chat
By default, ChatGPT knows nothing about you when you open a new chat. You can change that. Go to Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions. You get two fields: one for context about you, one for how you want ChatGPT to respond.
Fill them in once and every conversation inherits them. You never have to re-explain your business, your audience, or your tone preferences again. For anyone creating content, writing copy, or drafting client deliverables, this alone saves ten minutes per session.
About me: I run a coaching business helping health professionals grow their practices using AI and marketing systems. My audience is mostly solo practitioners and small clinic owners.
How to respond: Be direct and practical. Skip the caveats. Use short paragraphs. Write like a sharp operator, not a textbook.2. GPT-4o's Voice Mode for Real-Time Thinking
The voice feature in the mobile app is not a gimmick. It is a real-time back-and-forth conversation — the model can interrupt, clarify, and respond with natural pacing. It is not transcription. It is a different interaction mode entirely.
Use it when you are stuck on a problem and need to think out loud. Drive time, walks, post-gym — whenever your hands are not free but your brain is running. You can iterate on a pitch, work through a client situation, or draft a strategy by talking through it. The model responds, pushes back, and asks follow-up questions in real time.
3. Memory: Let ChatGPT Build a Running File on You
ChatGPT Plus users have access to Memory. When it is on, the model stores facts across conversations — your business name, your clients, your goals, what you are working on. You can see and edit everything it has saved under Settings > Personalization > Memory.
The key move is to be deliberate about what gets saved. If ChatGPT remembers something wrong, correct it immediately. You can also tell it explicitly what to store:
Remember that my flagship offer is a 90-day group coaching program priced at $5,000. My primary lead magnet is a free AI audit tool on my website.Over time, the model builds a context layer that makes every conversation faster and more relevant. It stops feeling like a tool you have to brief every time and starts feeling like a collaborator that knows your work.
4. File Upload for Document Analysis and Extraction
You can drop PDFs, Word docs, Excel files, CSVs, and images directly into the chat. ChatGPT reads them and responds based on the content. This is not just summarization — you can ask analytical questions, cross-reference sections, extract specific data, and have it rewrite or restructure the content.
Practical uses that save real time:
- Upload a competitor's PDF sales page and ask for a feature-by-feature breakdown vs. your offer
- Drop a client intake form and ask ChatGPT to draft a personalized proposal based on the answers
- Upload a messy spreadsheet and ask it to identify patterns or flag anomalies
- Feed it your existing course content and ask it to build a module outline or FAQ document
- Upload a contract and ask it to summarize the key obligations and flag anything unusual
5. Code Interpreter for Data You Do Not Know How to Analyze
Code Interpreter — now called Advanced Data Analysis — runs actual Python code in a sandboxed environment. You do not need to know how to code. You upload a file, ask a question in plain English, and it writes and runs the code to answer it.
Upload your email list with open rates by campaign. Ask which subject line formats outperformed the average. It will calculate the stats, generate a chart, and explain what it found. Upload your ad spend data and ask which campaigns had the best cost per lead. It does the math, not you.
Here is my last 90 days of email campaign data [attached CSV]. Which subject line patterns had the highest open rates? Group by format (question, number, direct statement) and show me the average open rate for each.6. Custom GPTs for Repeatable Workflows
Custom GPTs let you pre-load instructions, a persona, example outputs, and even uploaded reference documents into a saved model configuration. Think of it as a specialized version of ChatGPT built for one specific job.
You build them at chatgpt.com/gpts — no coding required. The builder walks you through it conversationally. Where they get powerful is when you give them deep context that would take you five minutes to type every time you needed the same output.
Examples worth building:
- A client onboarding GPT pre-loaded with your intake questions and proposal templates
- A content repurposer that knows your brand voice, your offer, and your audience — paste any long-form content and it outputs five social posts
- A cold outreach writer trained on your best-performing emails with your specific ICP loaded in
- A SOPs drafting assistant pre-loaded with your internal style guide and process format
- A sales call prep tool that generates tailored discovery questions based on a prospect's LinkedIn bio you paste in
7. Image Generation Inside the Chat
ChatGPT Plus includes DALL-E image generation directly in the conversation. You do not need a separate tool. Ask it to create an image, iterate on it with follow-up prompts, and download what you need.
The less obvious use is combining it with your other work. Have ChatGPT draft copy for a lead magnet, then immediately ask it to generate a cover image for that magnet. Or use it to create concept visuals for a client pitch before you invest in real design. It is fast, it is free with your subscription, and it reduces your tool stack.
Create a clean, professional cover image for a free guide called "The AI Audit Checklist for Health Coaches". Minimalist design, dark navy background, white text, subtle geometric accents. No people. Format: 1200x628px landscape.8. Browsing Mode to Pull Live Information
ChatGPT's knowledge has a training cutoff. Browsing mode removes that limitation for current information. When you need real-time data — pricing pages, recent news, live website content — turn on the Browse option before you send your message.
Useful applications: pull a competitor's current pricing and positioning, research a prospect before a sales call, check what a platform's latest features actually are, or verify a claim before you publish it. It cites its sources, so you can click through and confirm anything that matters.
9. Sharing Conversations as Links
You can share any ChatGPT conversation as a public link. Open the chat, click the share icon in the top right, and get a URL. Anyone can read the full conversation without logging in.
This is useful in ways that are not immediately obvious. Share a research thread with a team member instead of copy-pasting outputs. Send a client a walkthrough of how you built their strategy so they can see your thinking. Document a workflow by having a conversation about it and sharing the link in your SOPs. Use it as a teaching asset — "here is exactly how I prompted ChatGPT to write this email sequence."
10. System-Level Prompting Through Custom Instructions to Override Defaults
ChatGPT's default behavior includes a lot of hedging, disclaimers, and structure you may not want. Long intros, bullet-point everything, "Great question!" openers. You can suppress all of it through your Custom Instructions.
Think of this as setting a permanent system prompt. The model will honor specific behavioral instructions if you write them clearly. This is different from telling the model how to respond in a single chat — it applies everywhere, always.
Never start a response with a compliment or affirmation. Never add a disclaimer unless I specifically ask for one. Do not use bullet points unless I ask. Do not summarize what you are about to do — just do it. When I ask for copy, write it at the exact length I request, no longer. These ten features do not require any technical knowledge to use. They require one thing: intentional setup. Ten minutes spent configuring your Custom Instructions, turning on Memory, and building one Custom GPT will compound across every session you run from here forward. That is the actual leverage most people miss.
Start with Custom Instructions and Memory — those two changes alone will make every future ChatGPT session faster and more on-target than anything you have done before.
